Electric Vehicles (EVs) are rapidly evolving, yet they are still shrouded in many misconceptions and myths. With more EV models coming to market offering longer ranges and competitive pricing, interest in switching to electric cars has skyrocketed. However, some stubborn myths make potential buyers sceptical about making the change.

This comprehensive guide debunks the most common myths and misinformation surrounding electric vehicles. With the facts laid out, you can decide whether an EV is right for your needs. We’ll clarify upfront affordability, charging infrastructure, maintenance and running costs, environmental benefits, and more.

Transitioning to electric vehicles represents a major shift for drivers long accustomed to gasoline engines. It also entails overcoming some lingering concerns rooted in myth rather than reality. Our goal is to address those myths point by point, providing the details you need to determine if an EV makes sense for your situation. Great options are now available that may fit your budget and lifestyle perfectly. Let’s take a closer look at the realities behind electric vehicle ownership!

Introduction to Electric Vehicles and Their Myths

The advent of electric vehicles has revolutionised the automotive industry. However, a plethora of myths and misconceptions often make potential buyers sceptical. Let’s take a closer look at these common myths.

Myth 1: Debunking the Charging Infrastructure Myth

One prevalent myth paints a picture of insufficient charging infrastructure. However, the charging network for EVs across Australia has been rapidly expanding. There are now more public charging stations than ever before, and home charging solutions have become increasingly affordable and efficient, making EVs a viable option for many Australians.

Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth now have hundreds of public charging stations located in convenient spots like shopping centres, parking garages, and service stations. Apps like PlugShare allow you to easily locate stations wherever you are. Along with these, a standard wall outlet can charge your EV overnight at home. More affordable fast-charging units are also available for home installation, providing quicker charging, similar to a petrol station.

Myth 2: The Truth About Affordability of Electric Cars

The misconception that all electric vehicles are prohibitively expensive is another myth that deters potential buyers. While it is true that some EV models can be more expensive upfront, the lower running and maintenance costs often make EVs a more economical choice in the long run. Additionally, with advancements in technology, the market now offers a range of affordable electric vehicle options.

Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and require less maintenance than petrol or diesel cars. There are no oil changes, spark plug replacements, or engine tune-ups needed. Regenerative braking reduces brake pad wear. Electricity as a fuel is also cheaper than petrol per kilometre driven. Taken together, these factors offset the higher purchase price over time.

Many affordable EV models are now available in Australia. These include the MG ZS EV, starting under $45,000, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric from $44,000, and the Nissan Leaf, around $50,000. When you consider the fuel and maintenance savings, these EVs’ total long-term costs are very competitive with similar-sized petrol cars.

Myth 3: Electric Vehicles and Their Real Environmental Impact

The environmental benefits of EVs are often downplayed with the myth that the electricity used to charge them comes from fossil fuels. While it is true that the source of electricity can impact the carbon footprint of EVs, it’s worth noting that the overall emissions from electric cars are still significantly less than conventional vehicles. Also, with the shift towards renewable energy sources, the environmental impact of EVs will continue to diminish over time.

Even taking into account the source of electricity, studies show EVs charged on the Australian grid produce less emissions over their lifetime compared to petrol cars. This benefit will only increase as coal-fired power stations are phased out for renewable energy. EVs and their batteries are also almost completely recyclable, further minimising environmental impact at end-of-life.

Pros and Cons of Investing in Electric Vehicles

Like any investment, buying an electric vehicle has its own pros and cons. On the upside, electric vehicles offer lower running costs, fewer emissions, and a quieter, smoother drive. However, the initial purchase cost can be higher than their petrol or diesel counterparts, and charging infrastructure, while improving, may not be as widespread as fuel stations.

Here is a more detailed look at the key pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Lower running costs from cheaper electricity vs. petrol and lower maintenance requirements
  • Produce less carbon emissions and air pollution, benefitting the environment
  • Very quiet operation and smooth acceleration from electric motors
  • Attract government rebates and incentives in many regions
  • New EV models coming to market with longer range capabilities

Cons:

  • Purchase prices remain higher than comparable internal combustion engine vehicles.
  • Limited range capabilities compared to petrol vehicles (though improving with newer models)
  • Public charging infrastructure is still growing and can’t match the convenience of petrol stations yet.
  • Unknown battery replacement cost down the road

The Impact of Electric Vehicles on the Environment

The shift to electric vehicles is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. While the production of EVs, particularly their batteries, does entail some environmental impact, the overall emissions from EVs - considering their entire lifecycle - are much lower than traditional vehicles. This, combined with the transition to renewable energy sources, makes EVs a more sustainable choice.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, battery electric cars produce less than half the emissions of the average petrol car over their entire lifespan. And this advantage will continue to grow as renewable electricity increases. EVs also produce no tailpipe emissions, improving air quality, especially in urban areas.

While EV manufacturing has impacts like mining for battery materials, engine and transmission manufacturing for conventional vehicles is also environmentally intensive. And gasoline-powered car tailpipe emissions remain the single biggest contributor to their carbon footprint. Overall, EVs represent a major improvement for the environment.

Installing Home EV Chargers

The installation of a home EV charger is a process that requires careful planning, a bit of electrical work, and adherence to safety guidelines.

Selecting the Right EV Charger

The first step in setting up a home charger is selecting the right one. There are two main types of home chargers: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 chargers are essentially standard wall outlets and don’t require special installation, but they charge at a slow rate. Level 2 chargers, on the other hand, require a dedicated 240V circuit (similar to a clothes dryer or oven) and can charge an EV significantly faster.

Assessing Home Electrical Capacity

Before installing a Level 2 charger, assessing your home’s electrical capacity is crucial. This step usually involves a professional electrician who will check if your electrical panel can handle the extra load. In some cases, you may need to upgrade your panel or install a dedicated sub panel for the charger.

Choosing the Right Location

The next step is deciding where to install the charger. Ideally, it should be close to where you usually park your EV. Keep in mind that your charger should be protected from the elements if possible. Also, consider the length of the charging cable when choosing a location.

Had quite a bit of work done including safety switch compliance upgrades, new ceiling fans and the replacement of numerous lights, switches & outlets. All stuff that was long overdue. Travis was professional, friendly and so easy to have working in the house. The work came from what was originally a hot water service replacement with Brisbane Plumbing & Drainage (who were also great), and the handover and subsequent bookings were seamless. Highly recommended.
